Australian Matt Chessor, known as 'Matty' to his friends, has been guiding since 2008, scaling several of New Zealand's highest mountains and leading AC expeditions in the Himlayas. Now based in Canada, Matty is passionate about skiing and loves how guiding introduces him to climbers the world over.

  • Bio

Matt ChessorBorn in Australia, Matty is now based in Rossland, Canada. He started alpine climbing in 2000, at age 16, largely to facilitate ski mountaineering. Eventually, he ditched the ski’s for climbing boots. Matty began guiding in 2008 and is now a fully certified IFMGA Mountain Ski Guide.

He has both climbed and guided several of New Zealand's highest mountains. He guided our Ama Dablam expedition alongside lead guide, Lydia Bradey in 2013 and in 2014 he summitted Cho Oyu (8,201m) guiding alongside lead guide Steve Moffat. In 2015 he guided alongside Guy Cotter on Manaslu, and in 2017 lead an Island Peak expedition.

Matty loves challenging himself in a remote environment... "where the trivial first world problems we deal with are shelved and not much else matters but the task at hand!" As a guide, he enjoys the climbing combined with crossing paths with people from different walks of life, those that he would otherwise likely never meet.

One of his most memorable climbing experiences is watching the sunrise on the summit of Mt Tasman with some of his old climbing buddies.

Matty looks forward to getting back to the Himalayas and hopefully visiting Antarctica sometime soon...and says, "not much beats skiing pow!"

  • Matt's Testimonials

"I thought the leadership was very good. Matt did a good job going over the schedule every night and kept everything very organised."
    James Lawson, Island Peak 2017

"Matt has to be one of the most likeable lads you could meet! He has an ability to instantly put you at ease and I got on well with him from the off. He obviously has a lot of experience in the mountains which showed, and gave the team many helpful pointers."
    Spencer (UK), Cho Oyu 2014
