Mountaineering Books
Everest Mountain Guide follows the career of Guy Cotter, AC CEO and mountain guide, who has been leading guided ascents of Mt Everest since the early 1990s. An authentic and riveting behind-the-scenes insight into what actually transpires on the mountain, the huge challenges faced by both guides and climbers, and the life and death dramas that inevitably unfold. Guy Cotter is one of the most respected and experienced Everest guides in the world. His remarkable story will appeal to anyone with a taste for adventure, and who wants to know what a high-stakes life really looks like.
Written by Guy Cotter, Dean Staples and Mark Sedon, 5th edition 2018. The essential guide for any aspiring climbers and those wishing to brush up on existing skills. Covers a wide range of topics from knots and glacier travel through to crevasse rescue and avalanche awareness.
In 1951 Guy Cotter's father Ed joined a group of young Kiwis who intended to achieve the first ascent of Mukut Parbat, a 7242m peak in the Indian Garhwal. The team included (leader) Earle Riddiford, George Lowe, Ed Hillary and Cotter with a small Sherpa team. After Cotter, Riddiford and Passang Dawa Lama summited the mountain, an invite arrived from Eric Shipton inviting two of the team to join the Everest reconnaissance. This thoughtfully written and well-researched book uncovers the events that followed that without Cotter, Riddiford and Passang Dawa Lama’s successful Mukat Parbat ascent would have changed the history of New Zealand (and possibly British) mountaineering forever.
Written specifically for New Zealand's unique mountain environment; this handbook is highly recommended for anyone heading to the backcountry. This book contains strategies for identifying avalanche terrain, assessing conditions, wise decision-making and the latest rescue techniques. Written by Penny Goddard, an avalanche forecaster, educator, guide and mountaineer; this text also serves as the handbook for the NZMSC Avalanche Training Courses.
