Gasherbrum 2, the world's 13th highest peak and one of the fourteen 8,000m peaks, is situated at the head of Pakistan's Baltoro Glacier amongst giants such as K2, Gasherbrum 1 and Broad Peak.

Whether this is your first 8,000m peak or your third, the nature of climbing in this region will have its own unique flavour. Motivated ascensionists also have the opportunity to climb two 8,000m peaks in a week by adding on an ascent of neighbouring Gasherbrum 1 (8,080m/26,509ft), also known as Hidden Peak.

The climbing on Gasherbrum 2 is not especially steep but the remoteness of the setting makes this an especially rewarding experience. The expedition will attempt the normal route on the peak and establish three camps before mounting the summit attempt. This is a big mountain expedition and, although it is regarded as slightly harder than Cho Oyu, it is an ideal training peak for Everest.

Take advantage of your time in the remote Baltoro region with an ascent of Gasherbrum 1, or Hidden Peak as it has been dubbed, immediately after Gasherbrum 2. Using the existing Base Camp and Camp 1, the timeframe for this additional 8,000m peak is only 10 days or less.

PREPARE

Fitness

The need for exceptional physical fitness cannot be over-emphasised. A regular, strenuous programme must be followed for many months to achieve the level of fitness required. We recommend a training programme tailored to mountaineering such as those from Uphill Athlete.

Technical Experience

You must be able to efficiently climb ice, snow and rock terrain, multiple days in a row. Climbers will ideally have a broad set of climbing skills from basic rock climbing to advanced cramponing on snow and ice and strong rope skills such as rappelling and rope ascending. You should be comfortable with camp craft and self-care at high altitude.

Altitude Experience

Prior ascents of multiple 6,000-7,000m peaks are required (such as Denali, Aconcagua, Peak Lenin, 6000m peaks in Nepal, or the Ecuador Volcanoes).
